The value of your engagement ring depends on a couple of key variables. These include: the weight of the largest diamond, the characteristics of that diamond, the shape of the diamond and the metal that the ring is composed of.

Size of the Main Diamond

One of the main factors in the value of an engagement ring is the size of the main or largest stone. When it comes to size of a diamond, the thing that is important is the stand alone size of the stone. The Total Carat Weight or TWT is not relevant when determining the price. Another thing to remember is that even a small amount of weight makes a big difference when it comes to full or half carat increments. For example a 0.97 carat diamond is much different than a 1 carat diamond. Do not round up, and certainly don’t round down. Precision is important.

The Other C’s

Once you have determined the exact carat weight of the main stone, you need to figure out the other 4 C’s. To get the most accurate information possible, you should have a certification from a well-respected institute, such as a GIA or EGL certificate. If you don’t have one, you should take your engagement ring into a jewelry store and ask them for an appraisal. The cost is only about $75 per karat and just by looking at the stone briefly a jeweler should be able to tell you of the stone is of high enough quality to merit a certification.

Replacement Value vs. Resale Value vs. Retail Value

The diamond industry is kind of like the car industry. There is a ‘sticker price’ then there is the real price, then there is the actually value of the item. They all mean different things, but it is important that you don’t confuse them. The replacement value will be an inflated version of the retail price. Feel free to give that to your insurance company, but other than that it is pretty much obsolete. The retail value of your diamond or engagement ring is important. If you don’t know what your ring was purchased for, or if it was many years ago and you don’t think it’s relevant any longer, go to Blue Nile and try to build a ring that accurately reflects the style and characteristics of your ring. That will give you a pretty good idea of the current retail value. To get a rough idea of the resell value of your ring, take the retail value and cut it in half. That is a pretty good rule of thumb. Often times you will receive more than that, especially from us here at Engagement Ring Cycling, but to prepare yourself for the value, that is what you should know.
